Atlantic City is the East Coast’s most popular gambling destination hands down. New Jersey’s proximity to New York, where gambling is limited, is a boon to the Garden State. Life is pretty good for Atlantic City’s casino operators.
In order to continue the upward trend, every year Atlantic City is the proud host of the East Coast Gambling Conference. In fact, the annual event in Atlantic City is one of the biggest gambling conferences in the United States. It’s here that everyone involved in the gaming leaders across the US get together to discuss ways to improve the industry. The 2020 gambling conference has quite a few major casino executives scheduled to speak, so this year’s event should be very enlightening.
What we cover
Atlantic City’s Gambling Revenue Continues to Surge
Ten years ago, the recession hit Atlantic City hard. Many of the casinos shut down, and the city was on a serious downward trend. However, we are happy to report that over the last few years, revenue is surging in Atlantic City. In fact, the fate of the city has completely turned around. Atlantic City has proven itself to be one of the top gambling markets in the country.
One big reason for Atlantic City’s rebirth is the legalization of sports betting. New Jersey was among the first states to approve sports betting after the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 was struck down by the US Supreme Court in May, 2018. Once New Jersey legalized sports betting, tourists flooded back into Atlantic City. Many of the gambling tourists came in from New York and other surrounding states, simply to make a sports wager.
As a result, gambling revenue in Atlantic City has increased nearly every month since that time (last year, it peaked at $482.7 million). Both sports betting and casino gambling have benefited from the current trend, and there is no sign of the trend slowing down. The hotels, restaurants and every other business in the city have benefited from the gambling industry.
