The Garden State’s online gambling operators kicked off 2020 by completely razing the state’s previous online gambling revenue total. This coming season should be very good for New Jersey’s online gambling operators.
It’s been more than five years since New Jersey took the plunge on online poker and casino websites, and now, the gamble is paying off. Garden State gaming revenue has climbed steadily year-to-year from its beginning in November 2013. In the first calendar year, New Jersey’s legal online gambling generated nearly $120 million. By 2018, those numbers had climbed to just under $300 million. As it stands, 2019 smashed all records, raking in $482.7 million in gambling revenue.
Figures released last week by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement showed that the Garden State’s licensed online gambling operators generated revenue of close to $55.1 million in January alone. That’s a 64% increase over January 2019. It’s also nearly $5 million more than the previous best month, set in December 2018.

As usual, online poker did little to help set this new record high; poker’s monthly revenue total fell 2.7% to $1.83 million. However, that is $100k more than December’s total. Online casino games were in unusually good form, climbing by more than two-thirds to a robust $53.25 million.
Leading the pack, the Golden Nugget’s very popular online casino surged past the competition with an amazing $21.2 million in January. That’s around $9 million more than January 2019. Furthermore, this number smashed last November’s best of $18.9 million. Among the affiliated online sites that shared in this revenue were Flutter Entertainment’s BetfairCasino, Churchill Downs Inc’s BetAmerica and Rush Street Interactive’s Play Sugarhouse.
Coming in a distant second was Resorts Digital Gaming. Resort’s reported a substantial $11.9 million in revenue for January. However, that was significantly below its December record of $19.5 million. The Stars Group’s PokerStars brand, which shares Resorts’ online gambling license, kicked in $635k to Resort’s January’s total.
Coming in third, the Borgata constellation of sites set a new record in January, earning just under $10.4 million in revenue. That beat its previous record of $9.23 million in December by more than $1 million. Online poker chipped in close to $479k to the Borgata’s total.
Finally, coming in at a fourth place, the Tropicana’s casino-only sites raked in $4.36 million, narrowly squeezing out Caesars Interactive Entertainment’s total of $4.23 million. However, the good news is, Caesars Interactive Entertainment came in on top when it came to online poker, with more than $718k in poker revenue for January.
The online operations Hard Rock Atlantic City include both Bet365 and Unibet. The Hard Rock had a solid if unimpressive$2.46 million in January. The Ocean Casino Resort came in last, with just $531k for January. The good news for the Ocean Casino Resort, is that was five times more than December’s numbers.
New Jersey’s Online Gaming is on the Rise
Overall, New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market generated revenue totaling $482.7 million in 2019. That’s an astounding 61.6% increase over 2018’s results. If January’s numbers are any indication, 2020 should be a record-breaking year for all types of gambling in the Garden State.
Figures from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement revealed that the Atlantic City casinos nine casinos won $3.29 billion from gamblers in 2019. That’s a solid increase of 15.1% over 2018.
The good news is, online gaming and sports betting was a huge part of the yearly gains. When you add the $300 million in sports betting revenue into the total, the total gambling revenue for New Jersey jumps to $3.46 billion.
